Project IJS/ICE

A long running art project. Ice as a fascinating material for cooling is its focus. With attention to the history of global connections I explore how to connect it to different place and audience.

IJs/Ice the book, shows worldwide from the 19th century, until the advent of the refrigerator, a vanished ice production: from natural ice mining to industrial refrigerated ice manufacturing in 35 texts and 35 stunning black and white photographs. The slightly hallucinatory documentary Es balok that accompanies the book is just going to be specific, zooming in on a small ice factory on Java in Indonesia at this time.

IJS OVER HET IJ

diptych video installation on the ferry between NDSM-wharf and Central Station Amsterdam

The film diptych examines the connection between the current Indonesian ice refrigeration industry and – through archive material – a past ice refrigeration industry in the Netherlands. Ships built at the NDSM shipyard and the IJ are visible in both the film diptych and in the area, which allows the ferry passenger to experience during the crossing how the history of the area is connected to the present in present-day Indonesia.

In Carina Ellemers’ canvases, the textile support forms the painting itself. A credit to Mondrian, the founder of modernism, the horizontals and verticals are also decisive here. But here no absolute relations between horizontal and vertical, here they are not at right angles to each other, here the canvas itself with its supple character is leading. The canvas is more than the support, the lines are determined by the threads of the warp and weft, resulting in a sinuous supple linework. Cloth is an inspiration of a flexible union between vertical warp and horizontal weft; a geometric abstract pas de deux….

Vreemd / Strange

Docudrama | radio play | 56 minutes

Strange is about heart transplantation. The documentary reveals what it feels like and what it means to be involved in the twilight zone between life and death, where hearts change hands.

Six stories from the side of the givers and six from the side of the recipients: poignant, gruesome, moving, surprising and fascinating histories.

documentary ‘Onvoldoende voldoende’ | broadcasted by HUMAN on Dutch television

Onvoldoende voldoende

documentary | video | 50 minutes

Documentary about children at school: little ones that learn to count and some older children that throw themselves into geometry. The camera being often at eye-level, the spectator imagines being back in school.

The voice-over introduces the subject: the four- to sixteen-year-olds who attend school year in year out; the ‘tabulae rasae’ that will now be written on. Next, director Carina Ellemers mainly makes the images talk: in long close-ups of studying – and often pondering – children, demonstrating how well they can count or which numbers they can already (almost) write. Or the meditative repetition with which a single letter is mastered. But Ellemers also shows older children, learning geometry, English, swimming or playing the guitar. Patiently, she keeps close to her subjects, with the camera often at eye level, so the spectator imagines himself back in school. There is no music, so the typical school-day sounds can be heard. Shots of – still ‘blank’ – babies heighten our wonder at how much a child can and must learn.
